Are your cats giving up partying or napping for Lent?

We cats at the Paws household plan to have one big partying bash on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) before getting ready for some super-duper napping during Lent.

And we wanted to share our plans with the many feline families participating in this Sunday Selfie Blog Hop kindly sponsored by the Cat on My Head. We invite all of the kitties and their humans to come on over and do some serious pawtying today, or any time before the pawty ends on Ash Wednesday.

Sunday Selfie Blog Hop

While we won’t be at N’aw-lins’ Bourbon Street, or even in the French Quarter (Our Mummy would be terrified we’d get trampled by all the reveling pawtiers specially after the drunken driver plowed into a crowd of by-standers yesterday, injuring some 28), we’re planning to have one last pawty at home.

Our Mummy wouldn’t dream of letting us pawty with bourbon, as pictured here, because we kitties should never drink alcohol. It’s not because we are teetotalers, it’s cause it’s really bad for us – it could even kill us. We find lots of people leave out a glass of something like bourbon and water to find kitty taking a few sips. Best to call the Pet Poison Helpline in that case.

Lenny is thinking about how he’s going to pawty on Mardi Gras. No Bourbon or Bourbon Street for him, but maybe some catnip will do the trick.

Our human has promised us she’d get us some special catnip so we can whoop it up with the best – doing somersaults, long jumps, and rolling in the irresistible plant that we cats just Love, licking our paws, and making us act out, sillier than we normally do.

Getting decked out in our colorful Mardi Gras garb

Meanwhile, our human is going to help us get all decked out with our Mardi Gras garb, including a special hat, colorful beads full of bright purple’s, oranges, greens and multi-colors. Of course, we cats don’t see bright colors in the same way that peoples do, but we do see them and appreciate them. Our Mummy thinks this is pretty pawsome, and she’s spent some time making sure she captured this on camera so she could share these fun photos with Paws for Reflection readers.  Turns out both human and feline eyes have three types of cones that can identify combinations of red, blue, and green. As humans have 10 times more cones than cats do, they appreciate more color variations.

why cats aren’t part of my family
Pink Collar has been a member of the Paws’ family for 16 years. Here she’s ready to pawty during Mardi Gras, showing she’s still got plenty of cat mojo.

When the pawty comes to an end – and most pawties do – we kitties plan to settle in for some serious napping during Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, a contemplative day for many, followed by six weeks of atonement (whatever that means), as folks get ready for Easter. We’ve been giving this some serious thought, and we know while we may be giving up pawtying for the big event, we sure won’t be giving up napping.

Cats spend 13 to 16 hours a day napping

We, cats spend an average of 13 to 16 hours a day napping – supposedly, only the opossum and the bat sleep more tapping out at about 20 hours. That leaves almost no time for play and snuggles in Mummy’s lap. We plan to spend some extra time soaking up that sun which is getting warmer by the day. The days are even getting longer so we have more sun to soak up while we take in some extra zzzz’s.

Dieting isn’t on our list either, and we sure aren’t giving up our treats. If anything, we’ll be asking for more.

      • The bourbon was a cute parody; however, I figured I should be responsible and admit it’s very bad for kitties, probably not so good for us humans either. Have a great week!

    1. LOVE LOVE LOVE the photos! You guys know how to party!! Amarula is wondering…since you guys aren’t allowed to drink bourbon …if she can have yours!??

    2. Mardi Gras is so much fun, even though we’re not really partiers. I miss the days when Travel Channel would air the parade live. Mudpie will mostly likely catch up her snoozing during Lent…after all, spring and summer is right around the corner!

      • Mardi Gras is fun cause it’s so colorful. Kitties need to do lots of napping so they can go outside to play when it gets warmer. Mudpie definitely has the right idea.

    3. Nope no partying in this here palace, just the usual high jinks and chaos, which is enough for anyone! As for lent, I’m planning on making eep give up cream and pizza and all things fattening. Me, I’ll be giving up abstaining and will relish helping peep… by eating the cream!
