Kitty has the whole world in his paws on Earth Day

Kitty has the whole world in his paws on Earth Day. This post is a bit of a parody on a famous religious song, ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands’, a song, the Paws’ family remembers from Sunday School, and more recently, singing during Communion Services at the Gardiner Alzheimer’s Center, when my human Mom was a resident.
She passed on over 3 years ago, but Paws and our feline family still loves the song.We occasionally pick up the guitar and strum it while the kitties purr along.
The traditional American spiritual was first published in 1927. As we come upon Earth Day, April 22, we need to think about our world, and our environment, and fact is we do have the fate of the whole world in our hands.
The Lyrics, Kitty’s Got the Whole World in His Hands
Here are the lyrics. Think about it, if we were to change the song and insert the word Kitty for He, and sing Kitty’s Got the Whole World in His Hands, it fits perfectly. Here we recite the original wording of the song.
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the itty bitty baby in His hands
He’s got the itty bitty baby in His hands
He’s got the itty bitty baby in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got a-you and me brother in His hands
He’s got a-you and me brother in His hands
He’s got a-you and me brother in His hands
He’s got a-you and me brother in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s Got a you and me sister Kitty in His Hands
He’s got a-you and me sister in His hands
He’s got a-you and me sister in His hands
He’s got a-you and me sister in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands
He’s got the whole world in His hands

Earth Day takes on a whole new meaning
As we see our Polar Caps melting, and diseases like Lyme Disease moving further north, we can’t deny our climate is changing.
Paws’ human remembers the first Earth Day. Must I date myself? I was taking high school biology, and our biology teacher was all into the environment. It was 1970, the birth of the modern environmental movement.
It was a tumultuous time, and news of the devastation to the world was taking hold. The Vietnamese War was full-force, and students were taking to the streets to oppose it in massive demonstrations. Had I been in college at the time, I would probably have participated. That does not say that the Paws clan is Anti Viet Nam veterans because they were doing what they were told to do, protecting their country. Some of my best friends served over there.
Earth Day gains traction
Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962, helped the environmental movement gain even more traction, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries,. This began to raise public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and links between pollution and public health.
Earth Day 1970 – the Beginning
Earth Day 1970 gave voice to that emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns on the front page.
Back then, I remember stories about oil spilled and the wildlife affected. I remember pollution so think in cities, it was difficult to drive or even see. I remember stories about the deadly chemical dioxin running down rivers. Our cars were getting, if lucky, 20 miles per gallon. In 1993, Erin Brockovich created case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California in 1993. Her successful lawsuit was the subject of a 2000 film, Erin Brockovich, which starred Julia Roberts.
Kitty Has the Whole World in His Paws on Earth Day
We, in the United States, have made tremendous progress since then. It helps us humans and our kitties have better health. What can be worse than polluted ground water? If we drink it, we’re dead. If our kitties catch a contaminated mouse, what’s in it for them?
As we contemplate Earth Day, we do think about the song, ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands’, and we think about our cats having the whole world in their paws. Many cat species are at risk of becoming extinct. We love the big cats, though we wouldn’t cuddle with them. We also love our domestic kitties and our human friends.
On this special day, we share the words of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands. Stand up and stay strong to keep our environment safe. It is worth compromising life as we know it for big business profits.
If we love our cats and ourselves, we must stand up to keep our protections intact, and not let them be overturned because of monetary greed
